The automotive industry is still predominantly male-dominated, but this does not stop women like Carol from chasing their dreams and making a name for themselves. From being a petrol station attendant to owning her own mechanic workshop, she has come a long way and proved that women can excel in a field traditionally dominated by men.
Carol’s journey in the automotive industry started at the young age of 15 when she worked as a petrol station/workshop driveway attendant after school and on weekends. Her interest in the industry only grew, and she went on to become an apprentice, then later, a qualified motor mechanic, in a dealership from 1991 to 2000. She went on to establish her own mechanic workshop, Power Drive Automotive Repairs, in 2000, where she still works as a mechanic.
However, Carol’s journey was not a walk in the park. In the 80s and 90s, female mechanics were not accepted in society yet. There was no knowledge, assistance, guidance, mental health help, or rules in place to protect female mechanics. She experienced discrimination, bullying, and constant putdowns from male staff, including teachers and co-workers.
Despite the challenges she faced, Carol did not let the gender stereotypes stop her from pursuing her passion. Instead, she used her experiences to push for change and support other women in the industry. In 2015, she received a VACC Certificate 4 Scholarship, which she proudly completed in 2018. Her passion for the industry has earned her the title of Women in Automotive Member of the Month.
Carol’s journey in the automotive industry is a testament to the fact that women can achieve greatness in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her experience is not unique, and many women continue to break the glass ceiling and pave the way for others. The industry needs to embrace diversity and gender equality to move forward and flourish.
Carol is a role model to all aspiring female mechanics and a reminder that women are just as capable of succeeding in the automotive industry as men. Her story should be a catalyst for change in the industry, where women are encouraged to pursue their passions without facing gender discrimination. With more women like Carol breaking through the gender stereotypes, the future of the automotive industry looks brighter than ever.
The Power Drive Automotive team salutes Carol for her bravery, resilience, and passion in pursuing her dreams. Her story is an inspiration to all women who want to succeed in the automotive industry. Let us continue to empower and support women in their careers and celebrate their achievements.
